Overcoming your math phobia
Often referred as the queen of all subjects and sometimes the most feared one too...
Probably because of the importance given to Math by scholars as a highly difficult subject ends being the reason why students getting intimidated when encountering complex math problems and develop a math phobia.
I know, calling it a phobia sounds quite dramatic and extreme but it DOES exist; Arithmophobia. Arithmophobia is generally known as an irrational fear of numbers or simply the fear of math.
Like any other phobia, arithmophobia has the following symptoms:
Cause of math phobia:
For many students the discomfort caused by math results in them failing to perform well, because their fear is indirectly proportional to their learning; the more they fear the less their learning is.
Now, if you’re looking for ways to combat this fear and make sure that it stops bullying you, consider working through the following steps.
Confront your fear
Step one is to face your fear, stop thinking that you are destined to fail math no matter how hard you try. And do not believe any false statements claiming that you are either born with a math brain or you can never solve math problems.
Another myth is that male students are better at solving complex problems and are encouraged to pursue careers in mathematics.
Again, not true;
learning math is like learning a foreign language and you can acquire this skill with the right amount of practice regardless of your gender.
Build a positive attitude towards math
Show a can-do attitude, stop making comments like “I am not a math person, I don’t have the caliber for it or I was never good at math”.
The key is to believe with all your heart that you got this, “Math? What a piece of cake!”.
Once you stop thinking of math as your enemy and stop cringing every time you hear the word, you will notice how better you are getting at it.
Memorizing math formulae
Students often complain how exhausting learning mathematics formulae can be, and dread memorizing them for an exam. Well, the trick is to familiarize yourself with the relevant formulae in advance.
Start with reading them and understand the connection between meaning and the formula, before jumping straight to cramming them in one night.
Use different channels and memory techniques such as: flash cards, reading them out loud, talking to a friend, or watch videos for better understanding.
When memorizing something it is important to remove any distractions, you might want to disconnect yourself, stop scrolling through Instagram and concentrate.
Do not rush
You have had enough practice and you feel like you can conquer every obstacle that comes your way.
Take your time.
Read the question at least two times before getting to the solving it, word problems are especially tricky and can be deceiving in nature.
Carelessness and overconfidence can cause you to mess up the entire math problem and lose grades.
Work through complex problems
The secret is to fight the misconception that it is hard solving complex mathematical problems.
The skills needed to solve a complex problem are similar to the skills you have already learnt in elementary school.
Funny, isn’t it how we tend to complicate things with our false perceptions?
Remember to read the question and to fight the perception.
Practice on a regular basis
Practice makes man perfect, goes the saying, and this applies to mathematicians too. You can get nowhere without putting in the hard work, so you are going to have to give it time.
Expose yourself to new questions and different books, this will enhance your knowledge and widen your skills and abilities.
With more practice, you will eventually have everything on your fingertips. While practicing it is important that you also practice making your handwriting clear and flawless, because a single sign mistake can change your answer making it incorrect.
Ask for help when problems start
Don’t be shy to take help from your teachers, or peers when facing difficulty. Ask right then and there and avoid piling up the work as it will further confuse you. If your basics aren’t clear it will be difficult for you to understand the more challenging topics.
Visualizing the problem
Sometimes it is easier to break down complex problems by using plain drawings and pictures, use this technique to solve long and complicated word problems. Looking at things visually can help open up your mind to different aspects of solving problems.
